Airborne Institute Receives $15M Donation For COVID-19 And Disease Research

The Airborne Institute is a new research institution at UCSD that has received a donation of 15 million USD from the Balvi Philanthropic Fund. Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, directs the foundation, which invests in COVID-19 projects typically ignored by traditional funding sources.

UCSD founded the Meta-Institute for Airborne Disease in a Changing Climate with a record-breaking donation. The Airborne Institute plans to investigate airborne illnesses such as COVID-19, tuberculosis, and influenza. Their research aims to create better treatments, vaccines, and diagnostics while enhancing knowledge about how these diseases spread.

The Airborne Institute will partner with healthcare experts to create advanced measurement methods and computational tools to research diseases. Their objective is to achieve pioneering advancements in the field. Its primary objective is to understand the production and sources of bioparticles and how long they remain infectious. By sharing its findings freely and publishing research in open-access journals, The Airborne Institute hopes to benefit people globally.

Moreover, Vitalik Buterin has voiced his support for a new institution at UC San Diego. The research facility will employ state-of-the-art measurement and computational tools developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals to investigate problems. The Airborne Institute will be home to the UC San Diego School of Biological Sciences.
